Here is Why Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Banned in UAE
The most awaited animated Marvel movie of this year was all set and ready to release during the occasion of Eid Al- Adha, now banned in the UAE and Saudi Arabia
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the most anticipated animated Marvel film this year all over the globe. The film was ready and all set for the release on June 22 during the celebration of Eid Al-Adha is now banned since it did not meet all the expected censorship criteria of these countries.
Though the particular reason behind the ban is still unknown. Based on the speculations revolving around, the whole scenario is related to a scene of the Spider-women character Gwen Stacy. Fans suspect the appearance of a Pro-trans flag inside Gwen’s room during a particular scene, where it says, “Protect Trans Kids” could be the reason for the ban.
Based on the fan’s assumption, the character hurts one of the most sensitive gender-related issues in the country and does not align with the country’s censorship criteria; hence the animated movie might not be suitable for screening in theatre.
According to Saudi Cinema, it is not appropriate and suitable for all ages because of the highest contradicting nature of the contents used inside this film. As per the reports, there are no particular conclusions or discussions occurred as of now. In the report shared by Esquire Middle East, Vox Cinemas received a final word which states that the movie will not be screened in some Gulf Countries.
This is not the first time a movie got banned in the UAE and Saudi Arabia due to having content related to LGBTQ. Previously the famous Disney and Pixar movie, Lightyear got banned because of some inappropriate sexual context in the movie and not reflecting proper statements which value local customs.
Marvel’s Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also were in the list of banned movies.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was also a Marvel movie, released back in 2018. It was nominated for the honorable award Oscar, also won the Academy Award for the best-animated feature film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been made using six different animation styles to showcase the multi-verse culture and more than thousands of spider-mans and their lives.
